Caring for a loved one can be rewarding but also isolating. Caregivers often sacrifice their own needs, leading to emotional distress and a higher risk of isolation than other groups. As a caregiver, you may feel overwhelmed but unable to ease your stress. If that’s the case for you, consider reaching out to a local support group. There are several different support groups in Ontario that meet different needs, but all of them are designed to help caregivers share their struggles and find comfort in community.
Western Ottawa Community Resource Center
This resource center offers two support groups for caregivers, depending on your needs. One group is a general caregivers’ support group, and the other is designated for people caring for someone with dementia. Both groups meet on a weekly basis to allow members to discuss their experiences, offer advice and generally support each other as caregivers. Please note that sessions are currently carried out over Zoom. You can learn more about their support groups on their Caregiver Support page.
The Dementia Society
The Dementia Society’s support groups are unique in that they have “themed groups” that cater to different demographics. Some themed groups mentioned include Long-Term Care and Retirement, Young Carers and Arabic. If none of the categories are right for you, there are also open groups available to anyone. Group meetings are led by a Dementia Care Coach. To learn more about the support groups, go to their Caredove referral page.
The Ontario Caregiver Organization
The Caregiver Organization doesn’t have a support group per se, but instead they pair you with a single mentor with experience in caregiving. This program offers you the chance to connect with someone who understands your situation and can offer advice when helpful. They can also just be an ear to listen to what you’re going through. You can find out more about their services on the Peer Support section of their website.
Carefor Caregiver Support
Carefor offers our own support services for caregivers out of our seniors support centres in Eastern Counties. With Carefor, you have the option of a monthly support group or a one-one-one conversation with someone who can help you.
