There are many things to do as a caregiver to ensure your loved on is cared for. While each person requires unique care based upon their circumstances, this checklist can offer you a guide to help you stay on top of activities.
Personal Care
- Bathing – bed, sponge, tub or shower
- Wash hair
- Comb hair
- Shave
- Brush teeth
- Moisturize skin
- Trim nails
- Help get dressed
Toileting
- Help with going to the toilet, or bedpan
- Help with incontinence
- Empty colostomy bag
- Empty catheter bag/do urinary drainage
Nutrition
- Grocery shop
- Prepare meals
- Assist with feeding as needed
- Give fluids as needed
- Organize food for easy access
Medical Care
- Schedule and maintain calendar of medical appointments
- Pick up presciptions
- Ensure medication is properly taken
- Check blood pressure, blood sugar and vitals
Mobility
- Remove obstacles and ensure safety of surroundings
- Assist with walking and movement as needed
- Assist with transferring as needed
- Assist with exercises
- Support with accessing mobility equipment as able
Housekeeping
- Clean surfaces
- Wash and put away clothes
- Wash and put away dishes
- Vacuum and clean floors
- Pick up mail and pay bills on time
- Take out trash
- Change bedding regularly
Monitor
- Watch for changes in mobility
- Watch for changes in diet
- Watch for changes in mood
- Watch for changes in energy level
Companionship
- Spend set time together doing consistent activity, i.e tea at 2:00
- Get outside, or a walk or time in the yard
- Play games
- Read together
- Watch movies or TV shows
- Accompany on errands or outings
